Abstract:
This Action Research paper deals with the question: How can/do Dutch NGOs ‘create space’ for their own learning and as intermediaries for Southern partners? The research sub questions are divided into two parts and concern a) practices used by Dutch NGOs and their staff for learning and, b) potential ways in which Appreciative Inquiry and Action Research theories and methods can give greater meaning to the research findings.
We collected interesting stories of Dutch development/humanitarian organizations and
their strains to learn from earlier actions and to create space for the learning processes
of their Southern partners. These stories deserve being heard, especially because its shows that the ultimate goal of reflection is not to indicate the areas in which an organization still needs improvement. Rather, taking organizational/individual capacities and actions of the past into consideration should be viewed upon as an energizing exercize which can help an organization/individual to dream, plan and grow.
