Learning path "Learning from cultural diversity"

International cooperation is an exemplary setting in which to learn that respect for differences in perception and values determine how succesful one is. Mutual understanding of the basic values we use in cooperation is of importance not only for PSO member organisations but also for partner organisations. The more professional, national or other types of culture are represented within an organistion, the greater the ability of the organisation as a whole to understand the other.

In the learning path "Learning from cultural diversity" PSO offers support to a number of member organsiations in their attempts to get to grips with cultural diversity in their own organsiations. With help from SEBA (www.seba.nl) the organisations analyse the diversity in their own organisations. The analysis includes strengths and weaknesses, a collective view on diversity, understanding of cultural diversity in the organisation, and expectations.

Those participating then make their own choices on how to continue. Whereas one might chose to develop a policy document, another might chose a change strategy or operational instructions. At the same time, there will be similarities: opportunities and challenges for the development sector as a whole. The learning path is a mix of expert input, intervention in one's own organisation, network, and outside experiences. At the end there will be a presentation during which we hope to inspire other member organsiastions.

This learning path is part of the Cross-Over programme which is aimed at using and promoting the potential for immigrants in the development sector. There is a fund that was created specifically for posting mirgrants to projects in the South. PSO also supports and advises development organisations that wish to diversify their personnel.
